Qantas has increased its order for the Airbus A321XLR by 20 aircraft, bringing its total commitment to nearly 50 of the type. The majority of these new jets will be used on transcontinental and medium-haul international routes. Sixteen of the newly ordered aircraft will feature lie-flat business class seats and seatback in-flight entertainment screens, with delivery expected from 2028.

"Investing in new aircraft is one of the most significant ways that we can provide our customers with a better flying experience, and these billion-dollar investments are possible because of our continued strong financial performance," said Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson.

Currently, Qantas operates two Airbus A321XLRs. The airline received its first example in early July after it arrived from Hamburg via Bangkok. Earlier this month, Qantas operated its first transcontinental flight using the A321XLR between Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport and Perth Airport, following earlier use on domestic routes for crew familiarization. The airline expects to have seven A321XLRs delivered by year-end.

According to Qantas, the A321XLR's range of up to 8,700 kilometers exceeds that of the Boeing 737 it replaces by more than 3,000 kilometers. This extended range is expected to allow service to destinations across Southeast Asia and Pacific Islands that were previously not viable.

The announcement coincided with Qantas releasing its full-year financial results for FY2025. The airline reported an underlying pre-tax profit increase of 15% to AU$2.39 billion ($1.56 billion) and a statutory post-tax profit rise of 28% to AU$1.61 billion ($1.05 billion). Underlying earnings per share reached AU$1.10 ($0.72), despite net capital expenditure rising by 22% to AU$3.9 billion ($2.54 billion). Both Qantas and Jetstar achieved their best on-time performance rates since 2019.

Additionally, Qantas provided an update on Project Sunrise—its initiative for ultra-long-haul flights using Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft—stating that the first plane will enter final assembly in Toulouse this October with delivery scheduled a year later.
