Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) has patented a new design for a long-range widebody commercial airliner, according to an announcement reported by state media channel Tass. The aircraft’s design is said to be comparable to the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, one of the most widely used widebody jets for international travel.

Tass reported that the Russian-designed jet is expected to feature even lower operating costs than its American counterpart. No further technical specifications or production timelines have been released at this time.

A patent filing typically marks an early step in aircraft development and signals intent to pursue further engineering work and possible eventual production. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which serves as the closest equivalent according to Tass, is known for its fuel efficiency and range capabilities. UAC’s move may represent Russia’s intention to compete more directly in the global commercial aviation market, where Western manufacturers like Boeing and Airbus currently dominate.
