Charlene Reynolds Airport Director | John Wayne Airport

John Wayne Airport has introduced a range of new amenities aimed at making travel more accessible and comfortable for families and all travelers. The updates include dedicated spaces for nursing mothers, a play area for children, and an expedited security lane for families.

“Flying can often be a stressful experience, but these amenities offer families relief and comfort,” said Chair Doug Chaffee, Fourth District. “Our airport team is always looking for new ways to provide our travelers a convenient and smooth journey to their destination.”

The airport now features a TSA Family Screening Lane at the Terminal B security checkpoint. This dedicated lane is designed for families traveling with children, strollers, and items like formula and car seats. It is part of the TSA’s Families on the Fly campaign to help streamline the screening process.

For parents traveling with young children, John Wayne Airport offers several facilities. There is a Children’s Play Area near Gate 11 that includes interactive elements inspired by Orange County’s coastal theme. Nursing mothers have access to both a Mamava Lactation Pod located pre-security in Terminal C and a Nursing Mother’s Lounge in Terminal B between Gates 11 and 12. The Mamava pod provides privacy, adjustable lighting, ventilation, ADA accessibility, and can be accessed through an app. The lounge offers comfortable seating, a changing table, sink, and dimmable lighting.

Vice Chair Katrina Foley commented on the importance of these changes: “As a mom who nursed two babies, I know the stress of traveling when babies get hungry. Not everyone feels comfortable nursing in public, and layering in cover up blankets gets hot for babies and moms,” she said. “I’m excited that we now offer a private, clean, comfortable space for moms to nurse before flights at JWA to reduce the chaos of traveling with kids.”

Foley also highlighted improvements in security: “I’m also thrilled to announce that JWA will implement a new expedited Family Lane to its TSA operations, ensuring new families can make it through security without delays. True to our county values, these enhancements in airport security screening ensure we’re putting families first during the busy summer travel season and beyond.”

A universal changing table has been added in the Family Restroom near the play area to accommodate caregivers of all ages and abilities. In addition, travelers now have access to a multi-faith prayer space in Terminal C near Gate 22.

County officials expressed support for these additions. Supervisor Nguyen called John Wayne Airport “the most passenger-friendly airport anywhere” and praised recent improvements. Supervisor Sarmiento noted his hope that future upgrades would continue reflecting Orange County’s diversity: “I am glad to see our Airport moving toward becoming more people and family-centered, with a focus on providing amenities that serve the needs of all travelers. It is my hope that future improvements will reflect the diversity of our county and continue to develop an inclusive environment for residents and visitors alike.” Supervisor Don Wagner added: “John Wayne Airport has always been a welcoming space for people from all over the world… Now, with these new family-friendly amenities, Orange County’s world-class airport will be even more accessible and accommodating to travelers.”

The new offerings are part of ongoing improvement efforts at John Wayne Airport under its Capital Improvement Program (CIP), which focuses on infrastructure upgrades based on guest needs.

Charlene Reynolds, Airport Director at John Wayne Airport stated: “At John Wayne Airport, we believe a great travel experience starts with putting people first,” she said. “From family-friendly amenities to inclusive design and collaborative programs like TSA’s Families on the Fly, we’re proud to offer services that support every guest.”
