American Airlines and Delta add eight new or resumed domestic routes over two days
Policy

American Airlines and Delta Air Lines, the two largest domestic carriers in the United States by flight volume, have launched or resumed eight routes over a two-day period in early September, according to an analysis of OAG schedule data. The changes reflect ongoing adjustments in airline route networks as demand patterns evolve.

On September 3, American Eagle restarted service from New York LaGuardia to Atlanta and Madison, and began a new route from Washington Reagan National to Houston Intercontinental. The LaGuardia-Atlanta route will operate 38 times weekly using Republic E175 aircraft, while the LaGuardia-Madison link will run daily with Republic E170s/E175s. The Reagan-Houston service is scheduled for 17 weekly flights on Republic E175s.

According to the US Department of Transportation, the Washington Reagan-Houston Intercontinental airport pair saw 852 daily round-trip local passengers between April 2024 and March 2025. Including all Washington DC-area and Houston-area airports brings the total local market size to 3,496 daily passengers. United Airlines currently dominates at Houston Intercontinental with about 79% of flights. About six in ten United passengers are local travelers; the rest connect through Houston. American Eagle’s new offering is focused on capturing more of this local traffic segment.

Delta Air Lines is set to launch five additional routes on September 8: three from New York JFK (to Houston Intercontinental, Memphis, and St. Louis), one from Minneapolis to Westchester County Airport, and one from Salt Lake City to Little Rock. Most of these were previously served by Delta or its regional affiliates but had been discontinued for several years.

The Minneapolis-Westchester route will be operated daily with Endeavor CRJ900 jets; it has not been served since Northwest Airlines flew it until 2008. The JFK-Houston Intercontinental link returns after being dropped in 2020 and will use A220-100 aircraft daily. The JFK-Memphis service resumes after ending in 2012 with Endeavor CRJ900s; JFK-St. Louis returns after a gap since 2015 and faces competition from JetBlue’s daily service; Salt Lake City-Little Rock resumes after ending in 2008 using SkyWest E175s.

Examining Delta’s network out of Salt Lake City International Airport shows that Delta and its regional partner Delta Connection control about 73% of flights there. In the week spanning September 8-14, they will serve a total of 84 domestic destinations from Salt Lake City—a figure influenced by frequent use of regional jets such as the CRJ900. Most routes operate at least once per day; Milwaukee is an exception for that week due to scheduling anomalies but typically runs daily as well.

About sixty percent of travelers departing Salt Lake City connect onward to other destinations through this hub airport.

The introduction or resumption of these routes by both airlines demonstrates their ongoing strategies for expanding connectivity across major U.S. cities while also responding to shifting travel demands within competitive markets.
