American Airlines has reached a milestone with the delivery of its 1,000th mainline aircraft, a Boeing 787-9. The aircraft arrived at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport on August 29 and is registered as N849AN. This latest addition is part of a larger order that includes up to 30 premium-configured Boeing 787-9s, of which eight have been delivered so far.

Heather Garboden, Chief Customer Officer at American Airlines, commented on the occasion: "We are excited to grow our fleet, adding even more aircraft that offer customers a premium travel experience. Looking forward to our next 100 years, we are focused on elevating and reimagining the onboard cabin experience along with every aspect of the customer travel journey."

The Boeing 787-9 features advanced materials and design elements such as composite construction and raked wingtips for improved efficiency. The airline uses this model extensively on international routes from major hubs like Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Chicago O'Hare International Airport. Destinations served by the 787-9 include Madrid, São Paulo, Rome, Seoul, Tokyo, London Heathrow, Doha, Zurich, Delhi, and Auckland.

Brian Znotins, Senior Vice President of Network and Schedule Planning at American Airlines said: "At American, we know our customers are counting down the days to their next vacation, and we’re excited to expand our newly debuted Flagship Suite seats to new long-haul destinations. In addition to giving customers more premium seat offerings in key markets, we are also expanding this product to some of our longest routes, giving travelers an elevated experience when traveling to exciting destinations."

The airline plans to use its newest aircraft on expanded services such as twice-daily flights between Dallas/Fort Worth and London Heathrow and seasonal daily services connecting Dallas/Fort Worth with Auckland (New Zealand), Brisbane (Australia), and Buenos Aires (Argentina).

American Airlines continues to update its fleet with further orders in place. These include an order for thirty additional Boeing 787-9s yet to be delivered; an order placed in March 2024 for 85 Airbus A321neos; conversions and new orders totaling 115 Boeing 737 MAX 10s; remaining orders for Boeing 737 MAX 8s; and an order for Embraer E175 regional jets.

The current fleet consists of both widebody jets—such as Boeing’s Dreamliner series (30 B787-9s and 37 B787-8s) as well as the B777 series—and narrowbody aircraft from both Airbus (A319s, A320s, A321-200s/A321neos) and Boeing (B737-800s/B737 MAX models). The average age of American’s fleet is about fourteen years.

American Airlines was founded in April 1926 as American Airways. It operates nearly 7,000 flights per day serving close to 350 destinations across forty-eight countries. The carrier is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas.
