Air Canada has announced that its new Airbus A321XLR will begin service on the Montreal Trudeau International Airport (YUL) to Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) route in June 2026. Tickets for the new route are now available. The aircraft, which accommodates 182 passengers including 14 lie-flat business class seats, marks Air Canada's first use of a narrow-body jet with this premium seating option.

The flights to Palma de Mallorca will operate four times per week from June 17 through October 24. Air Canada expects additional A321XLR jets to join its fleet throughout the year, expanding service from cities such as Toronto, Ottawa, and Halifax. The airline is introducing the A321XLR to enhance its long-haul capabilities using a lower-capacity aircraft that can serve smaller markets more efficiently.

According to Air Canada, the new route demonstrates how it plans to use the A321XLR’s range and premium cabin capacity to target leisure-heavy transatlantic routes from Montreal and improve service on medium-haul European destinations. Palma de Mallorca is noted for strong summer travel demand and serves as a hub for tour operators, allowing Air Canada to offer package deals that include flights, vacations, and car rentals.

The A321XLR enables Air Canada to explore city pairs that previously were not viable without wide-body aircraft economics while offering lie-flat seats and an upgraded onboard experience. Mark Galardo, Chief Operating Officer of Air Canada, commented on the development: "The wait is nearly over as the imminent arrival of the game-changing Airbus A321XLR marks the next phase of international growth at Air Canada. This revolutionary narrow-body aircraft unlocks new, exciting global opportunities with its wide-body range and enhanced onboard product. Today, we begin that journey of growth with the announcement of Palma de Mallorca as the first new destination made possible by this fleet."

Operationally, each flight will have 168 economy-class seats alongside 14 business-class seats. Eastbound flights are scheduled for seven hours and forty minutes; westbound return flights are eight hours and fifty-five minutes. Departures from Montreal will be on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday evenings with returns scheduled for the following afternoon.

After news of this expansion was released, shares of Air Canada fell about 0.8%. This decrease aligns with broader declines in North American airline stocks amid concerns about rising fuel prices and economic indicators.

Founded in 1937 and headquartered in Canada, Air Canada operates as a full-service carrier with major hubs at Montréal–Trudeau International Airport, Toronto Pearson International Airport, and Vancouver International Airport. It is part of Star Alliance and led by CEO Michael Rousseau.
