Chase Freedom and Chase Freedom Flex cardholders have until September 15 to activate their third-quarter bonus categories, which offer 5% cash back or 5 points per dollar on up to $1,500 in combined spending at gas stations, electric vehicle charging stations, Instacart, and select live entertainment. After reaching the spending cap, purchases in these categories will earn 1% cash back.

This quarter's lineup continues a pattern of recurring categories for Q3 but introduces Instacart as a new addition. According to Chase, Instacart is considered this quarter’s “birthday surprise” category, replacing the extra bonus category that was offered during previous quarters for the card’s anniversary. "When asked, Chase responded that it considers Instacart this quarter's birthday surprise," the release stated.

Cardholders are reminded that activation is required to unlock these bonus rewards. The process can be completed online by providing a last name, the last four digits of the card number, and ZIP code through the Chase account portal or mobile app. "It's simple to complete this process through your Chase account; just provide your last name, the last four digits of your card and your ZIP code," according to The Points Guy.

The bonus categories can help users maximize rewards on end-of-summer expenses such as road trips (gas and EV charging), grocery delivery (Instacart), and event tickets (select live entertainment). Purchases at gas station convenience stores may also qualify if they are coded appropriately.

The legacy Chase Freedom card is no longer available for new applicants; however, existing holders can continue using it alongside other eligible cards like Freedom Flex. Cardholders who also have premium Ultimate Rewards-earning cards—such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred—can combine points for additional value.

Over time, maximizing quarterly bonuses can yield up to $300 in annual cash back from these no-annual-fee cards. Combining rewards with transferable points programs may increase total value further.

To participate in these rotating categories each quarter, users must activate them by the deadline provided by Chase. Activation windows typically extend until midway through the final month of each quarter.
