Air Canada has announced plans to launch flights from Montreal-Trudeau International Airport to Palma de Mallorca, Spain, starting June 17, 2026. The new service will operate four times a week and is made possible by the airline’s acquisition of the long-range Airbus A321XLR aircraft.

According to Air Canada, eastbound flights will depart on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, while westbound flights are scheduled for Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The A321XLR can fly approximately 5,400 miles—about 800 miles farther than the standard A321neo—enabling routes that were previously out of reach for single-aisle jets.

"This revolutionary narrowbody aircraft unlocks new, exciting global opportunities with its widebody range and enhanced onboard product," said Mark Galardo, executive vice president and chief commercial officer of Air Canada.

In addition to the new route to Mallorca, Air Canada will transition its nonstop services from Montreal to Toulouse-Blagnac Airport in France and Edinburgh Airport in Scotland to the A321XLR beginning in 2026. Currently, these routes use Boeing 787 and Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft respectively.

The airline’s configuration for the A321XLR includes 14 lie-flat business class seats arranged in a 1-1 layout and 168 economy seats in a 3-3 layout. Of those economy seats, 36 are designated as extra-space "preferred" seating options. Air Canada also indicated it would introduce "a new design standard for our onboard experience" on these planes but did not release further details or images.

Iberia was the first carrier to operate the A321XLR in November 2024. Other airlines such as Aer Lingus and Qantas Airways have also added this model to their fleets. American Airlines and United Airlines are among other carriers expecting delivery of this aircraft type.

Air Canada anticipates receiving its first of thirty ordered A321XLRs during the first quarter of 2026 and expects ten deliveries within that year.
