In August 2025, London Heathrow Airport experienced its busiest month on record, surpassing eight million passengers for the first time. The airport reported a total of 8.036 million travelers during the month, making it the first European airport to reach this milestone in a single month.

The record-breaking activity included August 1, which saw more than 270,000 passengers in one day, setting a new daily record. Terminal 5 also handled over 112,000 passengers on August 22. These figures were supported by scheduling data from Cirium, showing that airlines scheduled 41,805 flights and offered over nine million seats at Heathrow during August—a slight increase compared to the previous year.

Thomas Woldbye, CEO of London Heathrow Airport, commented on the achievement: "August is set to go down in the history books. (...) This is an outstanding achievement, made possible by the collective efforts of our colleagues, airline partners, and the wider airport community who worked as one to deliver excellent service for our passengers and the UK." He added that Heathrow "became the first European airport to handle over eight million passengers in a single month (...) whilst maintaining industry-leading punctuality and service levels."

Despite operating at full capacity, Heathrow maintained strong operational performance. The airport reported that "98% of bags travelled on their flights as expected and 96% of passengers waited less than five minutes at security" in August. On-the-day cancellations decreased by a third compared to last year.

Heathrow remains Europe's most punctual hub and continues to be dominated by British Airways. The carrier accounted for more than half of all scheduled flights at the airport last month.

The majority of Heathrow's August traffic was with destinations in the European Union—2.844 million passengers—representing a small year-on-year increase. North America was the second-largest market with nearly two million travelers but saw a slight decrease from last year.

Amid these achievements, airport officials reiterated concerns about capacity limits affecting UK trade and connectivity. They have submitted a proposal for a third runway intended to expand capacity and support economic growth.
