Vortex Control Technologies (VCT) has received approval from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for its FAA Supplemental Type Certificate, allowing the installation of aerodynamic fins on Boeing 737 Next Generation (NG) aircraft. These devices, known as VCT Finlets, are designed to reduce drag and improve overall aircraft performance.

The technology is already in use on several aircraft in the United States. With EASA’s validation, European-registered Boeing 737s and those in countries recognizing EASA certification can now be equipped with these fins. This development represents a significant regulatory step for VCT.

VCT Finlets consist of a patented array of small aerodynamic fins installed on the aft fuselage. They modify airflow to reduce drag, increase fuel efficiency, and enhance range and climb performance. According to VCT, years of testing and operational evaluation in the US have demonstrated fuel and carbon savings. The recent EASA approval applies specifically to the Boeing 737-700, 800, and 900ER models.

Vortex Control Technologies specializes in sustainable technologies that aim to improve performance for both commercial and military aircraft by reducing fuel consumption and emissions. CEO Gil Morgan commented:

“This EASA validation represents the culmination of years of research, development, and collaboration on both sides of the Atlantic. Achieving EASA validation of our FAA STC enables us to expand the availability of Finlets to airlines across Europe and many other nations, helping operators reduce fuel costs and carbon emissions while advancing aviation's path toward greater sustainability.”

Manufacturers continue efforts to make aircraft more efficient through various modifications such as winglets. The VCT Finlets offer an option for airlines seeking efficiency improvements while waiting for new aircraft deliveries.

Before receiving EASA validation, VCT Finlets were implemented by SunExpress in Türkiye—outside EASA’s jurisdiction—beginning in May 2024 with five Boeing 737-800s. Following a successful trial period reported by Airline Economics (https://www.airlineeconomics.com/), SunExpress plans to install finlets across its entire fleet of over 40 additional aircraft as part of its environmental initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions.

In the United States, Avelo Airlines has also adopted VCT Finlets after positive results over an 18-month period. All Avelo Boeing 737NGs now use these devices. The airline initially projected annual savings of approximately 560,000 gallons (2.1 million liters) of fuel and reductions in CO2 emissions by about 11 million pounds (4.9 million kilograms). Operational data confirmed these projections, leading Avelo to order more finlets as it expands its fleet.

The US Air Force is currently testing finlet technology on MC-130J aircraft through developmental flight tests conducted by the 417th Flight Test Squadron at Eglin Air Force Base. Similar tests have been performed on C-130 Hercules planes with reported improvements in range and fuel efficiency.

Boeing manufactures the affected models under stock code BA; Kelly Ortberg serves as CEO.
