EasyJet Airbus A320 | Simple Flying

An easyJet Airbus A320 departing from Basel Airport was forced to abort its takeoff on September 8, 2025, after air traffic control (ATC) ordered the maneuver due to another easyJet A320 approaching the same runway. The incident involved flight U2 7272, scheduled for Palma de Mallorca, and a separate inbound flight from Budapest.

According to Flightradar24 data, the departing aircraft had already reached a speed of 112 knots before receiving instructions to reject takeoff. At the same time, the arriving A320 was at an altitude of 1,100 feet and traveling at 154 knots during its final approach. In response to the situation on the runway, the incoming aircraft performed a go-around and later landed safely after entering a holding pattern.

A spokesperson for easyJet commented: “Following instructions from air traffic control, a flight departing from Basel to Palma de Mallorca aborted its take off and a flight arriving from Budapest performed a routine ‘go around’ on 8 September. At no point was the safety of those onboard compromised. Once cleared by the tower, both flights continued their journeys normally. The safety of our customers and crew is easyJet’s highest priority.”

The near-miss is expected to be investigated by French aviation authorities. Such incidents are commonly analyzed in detail by regulators as part of ongoing efforts to improve safety procedures in aviation.

Recent years have seen an increase in reported close calls worldwide. In particular, there has been concern about rising numbers of Category A runway incursions—where two aircraft come dangerously close without colliding—especially at busy airports. For example, in the United States these types of incidents have increased by 25% over the past decade according to reporting by The New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/21/us/airplane-near-misses.html). This trend has prompted further scrutiny of air traffic control systems and staffing levels.

Earlier this year in January 2025, an American Airlines jet collided with a Sikorsky H-60 Black Hawk helicopter near Fort Belvoir following ATC miscommunication, resulting in significant loss of life and renewed attention on outdated US airspace management technology.

easyJet is headquartered in Europe with major hubs including Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and London Gatwick Airport. The airline operates as a low-cost carrier under CEO Kenton Jarvis.
