American Airlines is set to introduce a new route between Miami and Bimini, beginning February 14. The service will operate three times weekly using Envoy Air Embraer E175 aircraft. According to Cirium Diio data, the last nonstop flights on this route were offered by Bahamasair in 2018. The new connection will allow American Airlines to provide increased connectivity through Miami, though the airport is not considered a fortress hub for the airline.

With this addition, American Airlines and its regional affiliate plan to serve 44 Caribbean destinations in the coming year. The Miami-Bimini route is significant as it will become American's shortest by distance at just 56 nautical miles (104 kilometers) each way. This change replaces the current shortest route from Chicago O'Hare to Milwaukee.

The carrier’s previous shortest service from South Florida was Miami-Fort Myers at 90 nautical miles (167 kilometers), which ended in 2019. If measured by block time instead of distance, Phoenix to Tucson would be the shortest with a minimum scheduled time of 35 minutes; however, that route spans 96 nautical miles (178 kilometers).

Other short routes operated by American include Charlotte to Greenville/Spartanburg at 65 nautical miles (120 kilometers), Charlotte to Greensboro and Philadelphia to Harrisburg both at 73 nautical miles (135 kilometers), and several others under 100 nautical miles.

On mainline jets, Charlotte to Greenville/Spartanburg remains the shortest for American Airlines. Cirium data shows that only about one in ten departures on this airport pair are operated with mainline jets between February and July next year. PSA’s CRJ900 regional jet accounts for most of these services, offering an average seat count of 76 per flight.

Data from the U.S. Department of Transportation indicates that nearly all passengers flying between Greensboro/Spartanburg and Charlotte connect onward through American’s North Carolina hub, with Orlando, Tampa, Boston, Fort Lauderdale, and Phoenix being top connecting markets.

From February through July next year, American’s average domestic stage length out of Charlotte Douglas International Airport will be approximately 491 nautical miles (909 kilometers). This is shorter than any other American hub—including Washington Reagan and New York LaGuardia—where recent network expansions have taken place. Analysis shows that more than half of domestic routes served from Charlotte fall below this average distance.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport serves as a major domestic airport in the United States and operates under IATA code CLT and ICAO code KCLT.
