Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has announced a $30 billion modernization project aimed at transforming the airport over the next three years. This extensive capital improvement program is one of the most expensive airport modernizations globally.

According to SimpleFlying, the effort includes new concourses, terminal renovations, and roadway improvements designed to handle increasing passenger volumes and meet modern design standards. The airport has linked this plan to major events such as the 2028 Summer Olympics, highlighting the urgency of these upgrades.

Passenger traffic at LAX illustrates the need for modernization. In 2024, the airport processed more than 76.5 million travelers, making it the fifth busiest airport in the United States, according to KGNS-TV. While numbers have rebounded since the pandemic, experts emphasize that facilities must expand and modernize to prevent bottlenecks and ensure LAX can serve as a reliable global gateway.

A significant component of this modernization is the Terminal 4/5 project, which introduces a new centralized departure hall, baggage facilities, and energy-efficient design elements. Karmactive reports that sustainable considerations are central to this initiative, with upgrades like LED lighting, water-saving fixtures, and eco-friendly building materials aimed at reducing the airport’s environmental footprint. The Automated People Mover is another key feature of the plan; it will connect terminals to offsite transit options, helping reduce congestion and emissions by decreasing reliance on cars.

Los Angeles International Airport is owned and operated by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), a city department responsible for overseeing aviation facilities. According to Wikipedia, LAWA manages both LAX and Van Nuys Airport and is tasked with long-term planning and capital projects. Its mission emphasizes connecting Los Angeles to the world while enhancing passenger experience. The $30 billion modernization represents its most ambitious initiative yet.
