Southwest Airlines has introduced a new offer for its Rapid Rewards Performance Business Credit Card, providing the opportunity to earn 120,000 Rapid Rewards points after spending $10,000 within the first three months of account opening. According to The Points Guy’s September 2025 valuations, these points are valued at approximately $1,620 when redeemed for flights.

The card also includes benefits such as free checked bags, preferred seat selection, and anniversary bonus points. However, experts advise potential applicants to consider the timing of their application in order to maximize value from the airline’s Companion Pass program.

The Southwest Companion Pass allows cardholders to bring a designated companion on nearly every Southwest flight they take for only the cost of taxes and fees. To qualify for this pass, travelers must complete 100 qualifying one-way flights or earn 135,000 qualifying points in a calendar year. Points earned through Southwest credit cards—including welcome bonuses—count toward this total.

By earning the welcome bonus on the Performance Business card and meeting the minimum spend requirement, applicants can accumulate at least 130,000 points: 120,000 from the bonus and at least 10,000 from spending. Additionally, cardholders receive an annual boost of 10,000 Companion Pass qualifying points within 30 days of account opening and each January thereafter.

Timing is key for maximizing the validity period of the Companion Pass. If applicants meet all requirements before year-end, their pass will be valid only for what remains of that year plus all of the following year. By waiting until mid-October to apply and ensuring that most required spending occurs after December’s statement closing date—so that bonus points post in January—the pass could be valid for almost two full years.

"With a little planning, you can almost double the lifespan of your Companion Pass and thus maximize its value," states The Points Guy article.

For those who travel frequently with a partner or friend on Southwest Airlines routes—many domestic U.S. destinations as well as select international cities—the strategy could result in significant savings over two years by effectively halving ticket costs.

"However, if you're considering adding this card to your wallet, we urge you to wait a few weeks. Apply in mid-October, then time your spending so you'll reach the threshold needed to earn a Companion Pass early next year to get the most from your pass," advises The Points Guy.
