Airlines for America announced on X its gratitude to President Donald J. Trump and Secretary Sean Duffy for their commitment to hiring, training, and fully staffing the nation’s air traffic control facilities.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), air traffic controllers handle more than 45,000 flights and guide over 2.9 million passengers across the United States each day. This critical workforce is central to maintaining the safety and efficiency of the national airspace system. Airlines for America has emphasized that ensuring full staffing levels is essential to reducing delays and safeguarding the traveling public.

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) reported that recent initiatives—such as accelerated hiring processes and financial incentives—helped meet controller staffing targets in 2023. These measures were designed to offset retirements and respond to rising demand for air travel, which has placed pressure on the air traffic control system. The statement of support from Airlines for America reflects recognition of the DOT’s role in strengthening aviation infrastructure.

According to Bloomberg, ongoing shortages of air traffic controllers have contributed to widespread flight delays and cancellations, with the U.S. system operating under strain in 2023. Addressing staffing gaps has been a priority for regulators and the airline industry, as air passenger volumes continue to approach pre-pandemic levels. The association has been a vocal advocate for solutions that ensure fully staffed facilities to stabilize airline schedules and enhance reliability.

Airlines for America, founded in 1936 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is the trade association representing major U.S. carriers including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and Southwest Airlines. According to its organizational profile, the group advocates for policies that promote safety, security, efficiency, and profitability across the aviation sector. Its mission is to ensure the competitiveness of the U.S. airline industry while meeting rising passenger and cargo demand.
