FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp., has started construction on a new regional facility in Bundaberg, Queensland. The site will cover 5,962 square metres and feature an automated conveyor system capable of sorting up to 1,500 packages per hour. Construction is expected to begin soon, with the facility projected to be operational in 2026.

The groundbreaking event was attended by Bundaberg Region Mayor Helen Blackburn, Natural Resources and Environment portfolio spokesperson Cr Gary Kirk, and members of the FedEx regional team. The facility aims to address growing demand for express freight services in the area and support local economic development. Its location near an expanding industrial precinct and Bundaberg Airport is intended to improve access for businesses in the Wide Bay-Burnett region to domestic and international shipping services.

Peter Langley, regional vice president of FedEx Australasia, said: “This new facility in Bundaberg is a direct investment in the future of Australian regional businesses. We are committed to empowering local businesses, particularly our small and medium-sized customers, by providing them with faster, more efficient connections. This hub will act as a vital link, seamlessly integrating Bundaberg’s thriving industries into our agile domestic network and creating new opportunities for them to compete on the global stage. It’s about more than just a building - it’s about giving our customers the tools they need to grow and succeed.”

Bundaberg has been identified as Queensland's second-fastest-growing local economy with a growth rate of 7.1%. At the start of 2024, its economy was valued at AUD $5.1 billion; its Gross Regional Product is now estimated at $6.08 billion.

Mayor Helen Blackburn commented: “The arrival of this new FedEx facility is a clear indicator of confidence in our region’s economy. It will not only create new job opportunities during construction and operation but also provide our local businesses with the advanced logistics and improved connectivity they need to thrive and compete on a national and international scale. This is a significant step forward for the economic future of Bundaberg and the Wide Bay-Burnett region.”

The new site will offer express pick-up and delivery services across Bundaberg as well as Gin Gin, Childers, and Biggenden regions. In line with FedEx's global goal to achieve carbon-neutral operations by 2040, sustainable features such as energy-efficient LED lighting and skylights will be included in both warehouse and office areas.
