Geir Karlsen, CEO | Norwegian Airlines

Norwegian Air Shuttle has signed an agreement to purchase 30 additional Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, according to a statement released by Boeing. This order brings Norwegian’s total commitment for the type to 80 jets, including previous orders that were confirmed in 2022 following the airline’s restructuring.

The deal marks Norwegian’s first direct order with Boeing since 2017. The carrier operates the Boeing 737 MAX under its own Air Operator's Certificate as well as through its Swedish subsidiary, Norwegian Air Sweden. Both airlines currently use the 737 MAX 8 model, configured with all-economy seating for 189 passengers.

Geir Karlsen, CEO of Norwegian, commented on the significance of the new agreement: "This milestone aircraft order is on attractive terms and secures our fleet growth in a way that supports our planned growth and sustainability targets. By exercising the options and adjusting the delivery profile, we maintain flexibility while reinforcing our commitment to operating one of the most modern and fuel-efficient fleets in Europe."

Norwegian was previously recognized as the first European airline to operate the Boeing 737 MAX and also pioneered transatlantic flights using this aircraft model between Europe and the United States.

Boeing's Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales & Marketing, Brad McMullen, noted: "Norwegian's performance over the past few years has demonstrated the strength of [its] network, business model, and strategy." He added that "today's agreement for an additional 30 737 MAX 8s will support their ambition to be the airline of choice in Scandinavia, providing flexibility to expand across Europe and beyond."

Karlsen highlighted that introducing more Boeing 737 MAX jets will help reduce emissions and improve customer experience: "They will not only lower emissions but also provide our customers with an even better travel experience."

According to a separate statement from Norwegian Air Shuttle, deliveries of these new aircraft are scheduled to be completed by 2031. The company stated that "the updated delivery schedule ensures an efficient and balanced renewal of Norwegian’s fleet, closely aligned with lease expiries and market developments."
