United Airlines has announced a major update to its Guam operations, revealing plans to replace its aging Boeing 737-800 fleet at Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport with new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. The transition will begin in February 2026, with the deployment of 10 MAX 8 jets.

The new aircraft are part of United's ongoing efforts to modernize its fleet and enhance the passenger experience. Each MAX 8 features seatback entertainment screens, an expanded Economy Plus section, Bluetooth headphone connectivity, power outlets, faster Wi-Fi, and larger overhead bins. These improvements mark a significant upgrade for Guam-based travelers, who currently fly on some of United’s oldest Boeing 737s.

A unique feature of the Guam-based MAX 8s is their customized seating layout to accommodate the airline’s range of remote Pacific destinations. The jets will have up to 166 seats, including as many as 16 first-class recliners. On longer routes, some seats may be blocked off for crew rest. Additionally, the front rows in Economy Plus can be reconfigured for medical stretcher transport when needed.

Wi-Fi will be available for purchase on these aircraft. While United did not specify which provider would supply connectivity initially, it indicated that Starlink service is planned for future installation. The interim provider has not yet been disclosed due to coverage limitations in certain areas served from Guam.

The new MAX 8 jets will operate all narrow-body routes from Guam and also serve fifth-freedom flights between Tokyo Narita and destinations such as Cebu (Philippines), Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia), Saipan (Northern Mariana Islands), Kaohsiung (Taiwan), and Palau.

Alongside fleet upgrades, United is updating the airport experience in Guam by introducing new check-in kiosks that process passengers up to 55% faster than current machines. The lobby at GUM is being redesigned with a two-step kiosk configuration intended to ease congestion and reduce wait times. Terminal construction is scheduled for completion by mid-October.

Flight schedules are also being adjusted for better connections. From December 1, 2025 through March 27, 2026, flights from Saipan to Guam will depart about four hours earlier at 6 a.m., allowing travelers a same-day connection onward to Honolulu via a brief layover in Guam on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

"Our investment in new aircraft and a complete refresh of our lobby in Guam will deliver the premium experience our customers expect of United and is part of our broader commitment to elevating the customer experience for our customers in Guam and the broader Pacific region," said David Kinzelman, United's chief customer officer. "For customers with connecting flights to or from the mainland U.S., these investments will mean a consistent, seamless experience from check-in to landing."
