Federal Express Corporation has opened a new facility in Bilbao, Spain, aimed at increasing its logistics capabilities in the region. The company says this move will enhance its capacity and productivity to meet growing demand for logistics and e-commerce services.

The new Bilbao site covers 2,700 square meters of warehouse space, which is nearly 2,000 square meters more than the previous location. It also includes an additional 400 square meters of office space over two floors. According to FedEx, the upgraded infrastructure allows for double the previous sorting capacity and can process up to 1,500 packages per hour. The station features 27 loading docks, an increase of 20 from before.

“This new complex represents a significant investment in our operational capabilities and allows us to enhance our service offerings for customers, supporting their international aspirations and operational needs,” said Ian Silverton, Managing Director of Ground Operations, FedEx Spain and Portugal. “With the Bilbao station, we considerably increase our operational footprint and improve efficiency, while also enabling us to handle greater volumes.”

FedEx’s operations in the Basque Country now include facilities in Vitoria and San Sebastian as well as an air gateway in Vitoria that connects with Europe and America by next day delivery. Together with these locations, the total sorting capacity reaches up to 6,000 packages per hour.

Across Spain, FedEx operates five air gateways located in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Valencia, and Vitoria; two main road hubs in Madrid and Barcelona; and maintains 26 operational stations throughout the country.

Bilbao serves as a key economic center within the Basque Country due to its strong industrial base and active business community. The region is recognized by the European Union as a leading innovation hub in Southern Europe (source: Bilbao - Eurocities), largely because of its Science, Technology, and Innovation Network.
