Federal Express Corporation has announced the opening of a new logistics facility in Bilbao, located in the Ibarzaharra industrial area of Sestao. This move is part of the company’s efforts to expand its operational presence and increase both capacity and productivity in southern Europe.

The new station, which will be fully operational in November, features 2,700 square meters of warehouse space—almost 2,000 more than its previous location—and an additional 400 square meters of modern office space spread over two floors. The facility’s advanced infrastructure doubles pre-sorting capacity and allows for handling up to 1,500 packages per hour. It also includes 27 loading docks, an increase of 20 compared to the former site.

Ian Silverton, Managing Director Ground Operations for FedEx Spain and Portugal, said: “This new complex represents a significant investment in our operational capabilities and enables us to enhance our service offering for customers, supporting their international aspirations and operational needs. With the Bilbao station, we are significantly increasing our operational footprint and improving efficiency, allowing us to handle higher volumes.”

FedEx’s presence in the Basque Country is marked by robust infrastructure that includes existing stations in Vitoria and San Sebastián as well as an air gateway in Vitoria that provides next-day connectivity with Europe and America. Combined with these facilities, FedEx can sort up to 6,000 packages per hour across the region.

Across Spain, FedEx operates five air gateways—in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Valencia and Vitoria—alongside two ground hubs in Madrid and Barcelona and a total of 26 operating stations nationwide.

Bilbao serves as a strategic location due to its status as the financial capital of the Basque Country with a strong industrial base. The European Union classifies it as a leading innovation center in southern Europe (source: Bilbao - Eurocities). The city fosters entrepreneurship through various events that promote networking among business founders. Over recent years Bilbao has become known globally for urban transformation projects aimed at maintaining competitiveness on an international scale.
