Emirates has implemented new safety rules regarding the use of power banks on its flights, now in full effect. Passengers are still allowed to bring one power bank onboard, provided it is under 100 Watt Hours and clearly labeled with its capacity rating. However, Emirates now prohibits the use of power banks to charge personal devices during flights, as well as charging the power banks themselves using the aircraft’s power supply.
The airline’s updated regulations also specify that power banks cannot be stored in overhead bins but must be placed either in the seat pocket or in a bag under the seat in front of the passenger. As per existing policy, power banks remain prohibited in checked luggage.
Emirates explained that these changes follow a comprehensive safety review prompted by an increase in lithium battery-related incidents across the aviation industry. The growing popularity of power banks among travelers has led to heightened concerns about potential risks associated with lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries, which can experience thermal runaway if overcharged or damaged. This process can cause fires, explosions, or release toxic gases.
