Health inspectors have temporarily closed the United Club lounge operated by United Airlines at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) after it failed a recent inspection. The closure comes after officials found multiple violations related to cleanliness and food storage at the facility.

The inspection, which took place between 10:40 and 13:30, led to the Department of Health posting a notice at the lounge entrance indicating that it could not be legally used. Passengers present in the lounge after noon were there illegally according to authorities.

Among the issues cited was a lack of proper certification for food safety management. Inspectors noted that "the person in charge has a class certificate but no Philadelphia Health Department issued Food Manager Food Safety Certificate." Other problems included inadequate hot water for hand washing—measured at only 74.8 degrees Fahrenheit instead of the required 100—and an absence of soap and reminders for staff to wash their hands. These supplies were provided by officials following the closure.

Additional findings included faulty dispensers for sanitizer and dish detergent, missing splash guards near sinks, and visible food debris in preparation areas. In other parts of the lounge, health inspectors observed evidence of fly infestations in both men's bathrooms and bar areas, with flies landing on surfaces. Black stains were also reported inside lower cabinets in serving areas.

United Airlines is not headquartered in Philadelphia but maintains significant operations there, with nearly 500 departures scheduled from PHL next month. Of these flights, most are mainline services while others operate under the United Express brand to destinations such as Washington Dulles (IAD) and Houston (IAH), using aircraft including Bombardier CRJ550s and Embraer E-Jets operated by partner airlines like GoJet Airlines, Mesa Airlines, and Republic Airlines.

United’s schedule from Philadelphia includes frequent departures to Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Denver (DEN), Houston (IAH), Washington Dulles (IAD), and San Francisco (SFO). The majority of these routes are served by Boeing 737s or Airbus A320 family jets.

Simple Flying has contacted United Airlines for comment on this matter and will provide updates if further information becomes available.
