American Airlines has announced plans to upgrade the cabins of its regional jets, which operate under the American Eagle brand and connect smaller and midsized airports to major hubs. The company revealed on Tuesday that it will begin retrofitting these aircraft with new seat designs and improved amenities.

The updated cabins will feature seats with lighter-blue coverings and distinct headrests: tan for first class and Main Cabin Extra, and navy with tan striping for standard coach. Each headrest will display the airline’s emblem. This color scheme matches the palette recently introduced on American’s Boeing 787-9P aircraft, which includes the latest Flagship Suites, and is also planned for the upcoming Airbus A321XLR.

All regional jets in American’s fleet, except for the smallest 50-seat planes, are scheduled to receive these upgrades. This includes Bombardier CRJ700 and CRJ900 models as well as Embraer 170 and 175 aircraft. The retrofit process is expected to continue over several years.

In addition to changes in cabin appearance, American will expand access to in-seat power outlets across its regional fleet. The airline is also working on improving inflight Wi-Fi. Nearly 300 American Eagle planes have already been equipped with higher-speed satellite internet, with all two-cabin regional jets set to have this connectivity by early 2026.

According to Heather Garboden, American’s chief customer officer, “Our customers value staying connected in the air, even on a relatively short flight. We’ve been working diligently to ensure our regional fleet offers the best and most reliable high-speed connectivity, especially as we look ahead to free Wi-Fi in 2026.”

American plans to offer complimentary inflight Wi-Fi for AAdvantage loyalty members starting in early 2026.

Another focus of the upgrade is increasing overhead bin space. The airline is collaborating with Embraer to develop larger bins capable of holding more rollaboard bags. Aircraft featuring these larger bins are expected in coming years.

United Airlines has similarly added larger overhead bins to many of its regional jets in recent years (https://thepointsguy.com/news/united-airlines-larger-overhead-bins-regional-jets/), aiming to reduce the need for passengers to valet tag their luggage—a frequent issue on regional flights.

These updates are intended to bring American Eagle's regional jet experience closer in line with that offered on mainline aircraft such as Boeing 737s and Airbus A320-family jets.
