Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, and United Airlines remain the largest full-service carriers in the United States. These three legacy airlines operate extensive domestic and international networks, catering to both business and leisure travelers. Over the years, they have survived industry consolidation and economic challenges that led other carriers to bankruptcy or liquidation.

Recent financial results show Delta Air Lines leading in revenue among the three. For 2024, Delta reported $61.6 billion in operating revenue, making it the top earner among its peers. United Airlines followed with $57.1 billion, while American Airlines recorded $54.2 billion.

Delta’s revenue is driven by a strong mix of premium cabin sales and non-ticket streams such as loyalty partnerships—most notably with American Express—and travel-related services like checked bag fees. The airline’s focus on premium products has contributed to its leadership position in total revenue generation.

United Airlines has an internationally oriented network and generated about $15.24 billion in second-quarter operating revenues this year—a 1.7% increase from last year’s quarter. The carrier saw passenger traffic rise by more than 4%, though yields were lower compared to previous periods. United continues to grow its loyalty program and recognizes significant revenue from MileagePlus partnership agreements.

American Airlines’ second-quarter results showed stable performance with a slight increase in overall operating revenue year-on-year despite broader economic pressures. The carrier’s domestic market remains its primary source of income, accounting for over $9 billion in quarterly revenues. American also saw growth in cargo and loyalty-related revenues but faces strong competition in both domestic and international markets.

Each airline maintains distinct strategies: Delta emphasizes premium cabins and diversified non-ticket income; United focuses on long-haul international routes and hub connectivity; American relies on its large domestic network with a substantial fleet of narrowbody aircraft.

Industry analysts suggest that while ambitious expansion projects are underway at both United and American, Delta is likely to retain its top spot for the current reporting year due to its broad-based revenue streams and premium market penetration.

The competitive landscape for these carriers is shaped not only by their ability to attract high-yield passengers but also by how effectively they manage costs relative to the revenues generated across their fleets.
