UNI Global Union supports Canadian postal workers after government announces changes to Canada Post

Cornelia Berger Head of Post & Logistics | UNI Global Union

UNI Global Union has expressed its support for Canadian postal workers following the Canadian government's announcement of major changes to Canada Post. The proposed changes involve significant service reductions, which the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) says will negatively impact public postal services and workers’ rights.

In response, CUPW has initiated a nationwide strike. UNI Global Union has stated its solidarity with CUPW members, emphasizing that postal workers internationally are united in defending public services and labor rights.

Jan Simpson, National President of CUPW and recently elected World President of the UNI Post & Logistics sector, said, “This slapdash approach, without full public consultation, is an insult to both the public and postal workers.”

“We cannot accept this attack on good jobs and public services. We will fight back, and we will make sure the Government and Canada Post hear us loud and clear. We have done it before—we will do it again,” Simpson added.

Cornelia Berger, Head of UNI Post & Logistics, commented: “This is a direct assault on postal workers and public service. Privatization and cuts are not just a Canadian problem, these are issues postal workers are facing all over the world.”

Berger also referenced recent discussions at the UNI Post & Logistics World Conference: “At our UNI Post & Logistics World Conference this week, we showed how governments and corporations are putting profits over people and have put into place an ambitious strategic plan to fight back. UNI stands with postal workers in Canada and in full solidarity with the CUPW in their fight.”
