Airbus is set to open new final assembly lines (FALs) for its A320neo family aircraft in both the United States and China this October, aiming to boost production rates despite ongoing political tensions between the two countries. The company will inaugurate a second A320 FAL at its Mobile, Alabama site on October 13, which will double its North American output. Shortly after, Airbus will launch a second FAL at its Tianjin facility in China, currently the company's largest single market for orders.

These expansions are key steps toward Airbus's goal of producing 75 A320 family aircraft per month by 2027. The manufacturer currently has a backlog exceeding 7,000 A320 jets—representing over 12 years of production at current rates. To address this demand and reduce customer wait times, Airbus plans to significantly increase output from both Mobile and Tianjin.

During last year’s mid-year financial update, Airbus confirmed it was ramping up towards the new monthly target. “By 2026, Airbus will have ten A320 family final assembly lines around the world, with the US and China each accounting for 20 percent of the company’s global production capacity. This ramp-up will benefit the entire aerospace industry’s global value chain,” said Guillaume Faury, CEO of Airbus.

While most A320 family jets are still produced in Europe—Toulouse has two FALs and Hamburg four—the expansion means that by 2027 both Mobile and Tianjin will operate two lines each and produce up to 15 aircraft monthly per site. This is part of a broader effort that includes modernizing existing European facilities with digital controls, logistics automation, and light robotics to further enhance productivity.

Despite calls from India—a major market where airlines like IndiGo and Air India have placed over 1,200 outstanding orders—for an in-country commercial jet FAL, Airbus has opted not to expand its mainline assembly footprint there due to concerns about overstretching supply chains. Instead, it continues significant investments through partnerships:

- In Vadodara, a joint venture between Airbus Defense & Space and Tata Advanced Systems is assembling C295 military transport aircraft for the Indian Air Force.

- With Tata Advanced Systems again as partner, an H125 helicopter assembly line is being established for civil aviation needs.

- Indian suppliers such as Mahindra Aerostructures are increasing their roles by manufacturing key fuselage components for various models.

These moves underscore Airbus's focus on strengthening relationships within strategic markets while balancing geopolitical risks tied to expanding operations across rival economies.
