FedEx and Orbis International are highlighting their long-standing partnership ahead of World Sight Day on October 9. The two organizations marked the occasion with a goodwill visit by the Flying Eye Hospital in Dubai from September 30 to October 3, where FedEx employees and guests toured the aircraft. The event emphasized both organizations’ commitment to expanding access to eye care globally and recognized Dubai’s role as a center for humanitarian collaboration.

Bruce Johnson, director of aircraft operations and maintenance at Orbis International, commented on the relationship: “We frequently bring the Flying Eye Hospital to Dubai between projects in Asia and Africa. For more than 18 years, FedEx teams at Dubai International Airport and Dubai World Central have played a vital role in supporting our aircraft—from logistics to maintenance—whenever we’re in the region. Every time we arrive, we’re welcomed like family. Their hospitality, dedication, and willingness to go the extra mile make our work smoother, more impactful, and ensure we’re ready to deliver sight-saving care wherever it’s needed next.”

Worldwide, about 1.1 billion people experience vision loss; most live in low- and middle-income countries (https://www.orbis.org/en/about-us/annual-report-2024). The Flying Eye Hospital was established to address this issue. It operates as an accredited ophthalmic teaching hospital inside a FedEx-donated MD-10 aircraft equipped with an operating room, classroom, and recovery space. Since its inaugural flight in 1982, it has visited over 80 countries offering training for local medical professionals along with surgeries targeting preventable blindness.

FedEx has supported Orbis since its inception by providing more than $22 million through donations and shipping services. In addition to donating the current plane used by Orbis, FedEx covers costs related to parts, maintenance, pilot training, and supplies pilots who volunteer their time for flights worldwide. In 2021, FedEx renewed its commitment with a $3.5 million donation intended for continued financial and operational support over five years.

Taarek Hinedi, vice president of Middle East and Africa operations at FedEx stated: “As World Sight Day approaches, FedEx is proud to stand with Orbis in creating a world without avoidable blindness and vision loss. Welcoming the Flying Eye Hospital to Dubai is a reminder of the vital work being done across the Middle East, Indian Subcontinent, and Africa to expand access to eye care. By supporting these efforts with our resources and expertise, we are helping local communities strengthen healthcare systems and create brighter opportunities for the future.”

Captain Gary Dyson, chief pilot for Orbis International and retired FedEx pilot said: “With Orbis, I’m not just flying an aircraft—I’m part of a mission where people’s lives are changed forever. Seeing a child regain their sight and knowing they now have a chance to learn, play, and one day support their own family is an incredible feeling. I’m proud to have spent a large part of my life working for FedEx which made it possible for its pilots to give back in such a meaningful way.”

In addition to its mobile hospital program (https://www.awarenessdays.com/awareness-days-calendar/world-sight-day/), Orbis partners with hospitals throughout Africa, Asia, and Latin America as well as offers digital training tools such as Cybersight (https://www.orbis.org/en/what-we-do/cybersight). This platform provides e-learning resources plus telehealth support using artificial intelligence screening technology so that local eye care providers can better treat patients.
