The Boeing 747, often called the “Queen of the Skies,” continues to play a significant role in air cargo and specialty operations, even as passenger airlines have largely retired the aircraft and production has ended. In 2025, a select group of operators still maintain large fleets of 747s, highlighting the model’s ongoing importance in global logistics.

Kalitta Air ranks fifth among 747 operators with a fleet of 22 Boeing 747-400 freighters. The US-based carrier uses its aircraft for contract logistics, ACMI (aircraft, crew, maintenance, and insurance) roles, and charter freight services. Kalitta’s approach allows it to operate older aircraft longer than many scheduled carriers. The average age of its 747-400s is about 27 years.

Cargolux holds fourth place with a core fleet of 26 active Boeing 747s based in Luxembourg. Its mix includes both -400 and -8 variants: six each of the Boeing 747-400ERF and -400F models, plus fourteen Boeing 747-8Fs. Cargolux operates these aircraft on scheduled routes connecting Europe with Asia, North America, and Africa.

Lufthansa stands out as the third-largest operator with a fleet of 27 Boeing 747s—19 are newer -8 models while eight are older -400s. Lufthansa is notable for maintaining one of the last major scheduled passenger fleets of the type alongside its cargo operations. The airline plans to gradually retire some older widebody jets by 2028 but continues to use the model on long-haul intercontinental routes from Frankfurt Airport.

UPS Airlines is second on the list with a total fleet of 43 Boeing 747s used primarily for long-haul cargo flights between global hubs. UPS operates both converted legacy models (such as BCF/FSCD) and new-build freighters like the Boeing 747-8F. Recent acquisitions include two former Qatar Airways aircraft to bolster capacity.

Atlas Air leads all operators worldwide with a fleet comprising approximately sixty-five Boeing 747s as reported in August 2024. This includes seventeen -8Fs, thirty-nine -400Fs, five passenger-configured -400s, and four Large Cargo Freighters (LCFs), which are modified for outsized loads such as transporting parts for other large jets like the Boeing 787. Atlas Air’s business centers around using these aircraft for scheduled freight service, charters, ACMI contracts, and specialized projects that require nose-loading capabilities unique to this type.

The continued operation of these fleets demonstrates how essential the Boeing 747 remains within certain segments despite challenges related to fuel costs, maintenance complexity, regulatory pressures on emissions, and competition from more efficient twin-engine widebodies.

Looking forward into coming years there may be further retirements among older models like the -400 series or consolidation within existing fleets; however specialized needs—especially those requiring nose-loading or oversized cargo—ensure that some demand for this iconic jet will likely persist.
