Lufthansa Airlines and Lufthansa CityLine have once again received validation under the European Union’s EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) regulation for their environmental management systems at the Frankfurt and Munich hubs. The EMAS seal recognizes companies that voluntarily adopt rigorous standards for environmental management and auditing, with external assessors reviewing their processes in detail.

The validation highlights the ongoing efforts of both airlines to improve their operational environmental management. The assessment process includes audits, inspections, and discussions with specialist departments to evaluate how well employees are implementing these values.

Jens Ritter, CEO of Lufthansa Airlines, commented on the milestone: "With the 2025 environmental statement, we are celebrating a special anniversary: 25 years ago, Lufthansa CityLine was the first airline worldwide to receive validation according to the demanding EMAS standard. Since then, we have been continuously working on the further development of our operational environmental management system. Through more efficient use of resources and optimized processes at Lufthansa Airlines and Lufthansa CityLine, we are advancing both environmental and economic goals. We are maintaining this course even in economically challenging times."

Lufthansa CityLine became the first airline globally to implement an environmental concept aligned with EMAS in 2000. In 2018, Lufthansa Airlines introduced a certified system at its Munich location, merging it with Lufthansa CityLine’s system in 2022. Frankfurt joined this initiative in December 2023. This expansion marks a significant step toward sustainability for the core Lufthansa brand. Both companies now share a joint EMAS validation and report their progress together through an annual environmental statement available online (https://www.lufthansa.com/content/dam/lh/documents/sustainability/lh-environmental-statement-2025-en.pdf).

Within both airlines, about 40 environmental coordinators work across departments to promote sustainable practices. Digital tools help increase transparency about environmental impacts and support emission reductions through data-driven analyses and monitoring. In 2024, new measures were introduced alongside existing ones. These include shutting off engines during taxiing, improving recycling processes, and optimizing beverage loading to save fuel and reduce CO2 emissions.
