Tim Clark, President of Emirates | Emirates Airlines

Emirates has marked 25 years of operations in Uganda, highlighting its role in connecting the country to its global network since launching flights to Entebbe in 2000. Over this period, the airline has transported 2.8 million passengers on 15,900 flights between Dubai and Entebbe.

The airline’s service initially operated three times a week with stops in Nairobi and later Addis Ababa before becoming a direct route in 2007. Emirates introduced the Boeing 777-200LR on the route in 2015, replacing the Airbus A330-200 and increasing seat capacity by 12%. Currently, Emirates operates a three-class Boeing 777-300ER on the route and remains the only international carrier offering a First Class cabin for travelers to and from Entebbe.

Emirates has also partnered with the Uganda Tourism Board over the past two years to promote Ugandan tourism destinations across its network. This collaboration has helped increase inbound tourism, resulting in a reported 16% rise in passenger numbers on the Dubai-Entebbe route since January 2025, with significant traffic coming from countries such as the US, China, India, UK, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, and UAE.

Beyond flight operations, Emirates has supported local communities through initiatives like its ‘Dubai 7s for Good’ CSR programme. In September 2024, this initiative raised more than UGX 587 million to improve facilities at North Road Primary School in Uganda. The funds have been used for projects including building a rugby pitch with shaded bleachers for up to 2,000 spectators, installing solar-powered water stations, and donating sports equipment.

Mohamed Taher, Emirates’ Country Manager for Uganda said: “Uganda is not only a key market on our network, but also one of our most loved destinations in Africa. Over the last 25 years, we have built strong and prosperous ties with customers, partners and stakeholders, by investing in our operations to provide a best-in-class service. As Uganda’s tourism and aviation sectors continue to flourish, we are proud to play a pivotal role in connecting international travellers to the country and helping passengers from Uganda explore more of the world in comfort.”

To celebrate its anniversary milestone, Emirates operated a special one-off flight featuring its refurbished four-class Boeing 777 aircraft followed by a static tour attended by key figures including General Edward Katumba Wamala (Uganda’s Minister of Works and Transportation), Fred Bamwesigye (Director General of Uganda Civil Aviation Authority), Rashid Alardha (Emirates Vice President Commercial Operations for Sub-Saharan Africa), and Mohamed Taher.

During the tour event guests viewed new features such as next-generation cabins and Premium Economy seating—presented for the first time in Uganda—alongside other amenities offered across all classes.

The upgraded aircraft is part of Emirates’ $5 billion retrofit programme aimed at modernizing its fleet of A380s and Boeing 777s. The project is managed internally by Emirates Engineering; so far it has completed upgrades on 72 aircraft (36 A380s and 37 Boeing 777s). The airline plans to expand these upgrades further into 2026 so that all destinations—including Entebbe—will be served by refreshed planes.
