Delta Air Lines continues to operate a significant number of Boeing 717 aircraft, which it first began using in 2013 after acquiring them from Southwest Airlines. The planes, originally known as the MD-95, were surplus for Southwest following its acquisition of AirTran due to Southwest's exclusive use of the Boeing 737.

According to ch-aviation, Delta currently owns 80 Boeing 717s, although not all are active. At an average age of 24 years, these jets are among the oldest in Delta’s fleet. Each aircraft is configured with 110 seats: 12 recliner-style seats in first class, 20 Comfort+ seats, and 78 main cabin seats. The Boeing 717 is Delta’s second-smallest mainline aircraft after the Airbus A220-100.

Data from Cirium Diio shows that in November, Delta will deploy the Boeing 717 on 93 domestic routes. Thirty of these routes will see less than daily service with this aircraft type, and on 22 routes, the jet will be used only once or twice during the month. The airline plans an average of 398 daily two-way flights with the Boeing 717 in November, up from about 350 flights during the same period last year. This increase is partly attributed to a reduction in average flight distance by eight percent year-over-year and to the fact that Delta owns these aircraft outright, making them more economical despite higher fuel consumption and maintenance costs.

Atlanta remains central to Delta’s operations with the Boeing 717. Of the total daily movements scheduled for November, Atlanta accounts for about 290—roughly three-quarters of all such flights. Minneapolis will see around 33 daily movements and Detroit about 75. The growth in Atlanta represents a quarter more services compared to last November; however, Minneapolis has experienced a decline of nearly forty percent.

All top ten routes served by Delta’s Boeing 717s originate from Atlanta. The most frequent route is between Atlanta and Charlotte, with six to eight departures each way per day and a total of over two hundred flights for the month. This route connects two major airports: Atlanta—the world’s busiest by passenger numbers—and Charlotte—American Airlines’ second-busiest hub. According to data from the US Department of Transportation, approximately eighty percent of passengers flying between Atlanta and Charlotte on Delta connect onward through Atlanta.

Other high-frequency routes from Atlanta include Greensboro, Asheville, Jackson, Dallas Love Field, Lexington, Greenville/Spartanburg, Tallahassee, Gainesville, and Little Rock.

On average across all November services operated by Delta’s Boeing 717s, each flight covers about 360 nautical miles (667 kilometers). From Atlanta specifically, this figure drops slightly due to shorter regional hops. However, Minneapolis-based routes tend to be longer—by roughly seventy-eight percent compared to those from Atlanta.

The longest scheduled Boeing 717 flight next month will run between Minneapolis and Savannah at nearly one thousand nautical miles (1,758 kilometers), while the shortest will be between Detroit and Cleveland at just eighty-three nautical miles (154 kilometers). Both of these specific city pairs are scheduled for only one roundtrip using this aircraft during November.
