European airline easyJet has announced plans to open its first base outside Europe, selecting Marrakech, Morocco as the location. The UK-based low-cost carrier will station three aircraft at Marrakesh Menara Airport starting in spring 2026. This move is part of easyJet’s broader strategy to expand its operations in Africa.

Currently, easyJet operates flights to five Moroccan airports: Marrakech, Agadir, Rabat, Essaouira, and Tangier. With the new base, the airline will also introduce four additional routes from European cities to Morocco. These include services from Hamburg, Lille, and Strasbourg to Marrakech, and from Geneva to Tangier.

The decision follows an agreement signed on October 15, 2025 between easyJet and the Moroccan National Tourism Office. The partnership allows easyJet to base three aircraft at Marrakesh Menara Airport. According to the company, this will help connect Morocco with more destinations across Europe and improve access to airports with limited capacity.

With the establishment of the Marrakech base, easyJet expects to offer a record four million seats during its first year of operation there. The airline began flying to Morocco in 2006 and is approaching two decades of service in the country. Over time, it has become the third-largest airline in Morocco and ranks second in size at Marrakesh airport.

Kenton Jarvis, CEO of easyJet, commented on the expansion: “There is no doubt Morocco is a key market for easyJet: we are the largest carrier to Morocco from the UK and from Switzerland, Morocco is our fastest growing market outside Europe and a major destination for our easyJet holidays customers.”

The new routes will start launching on March 30, 2026. Flights between Geneva and Tangier will operate twice weekly on Mondays and Thursdays. Services connecting Hamburg with Marrakech begin May 1 with flights on Tuesdays and Fridays. The Lille-Marrakech route starts May 3 with two weekly flights on Wednesdays and Sundays. Also beginning May 3 is a route linking Strasbourg with Marrakech; these flights will run twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays.

easyJet’s current fleet consists of 190 aircraft with an average age of just over ten years. The fleet includes Airbus A320-200s, A320neos, A319s, and A321neo jets. The company has placed orders for additional A321neo and A320neo aircraft as part of its future growth plans.

In addition to expanding its network in Africa, easyJet has reportedly attracted interest from potential investors. According to Corriere della Sera, several parties are reviewing investment opportunities in the airline. Among those named is Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), which is said to be working alongside an investment fund during these discussions. Following reports about investor interest, easyJet shares rose by 12% this week—their largest increase in three years.
