American Airlines AAdvantage loyalty program members can now use their points to book flights on Chilean low-cost carrier JetSmart directly through American's website. Previously, members could only redeem points for JetSmart flights by booking on the budget airline’s own platform.

This update is the latest development in the partnership between American and JetSmart, which began four years ago when American acquired a 35.4% stake in JetSmart and JetSmart adopted AAdvantage as its loyalty program.

American Airlines has held a strong presence in South America since it acquired Eastern Air Lines' regional assets in 1990. The carrier operates more flights to South America than any other U.S. airline, providing it with a significant local footprint. “In most of the countries across South America, American is a native brand,” said Vasu Raja, former chief commercial officer at American Airlines, in 2021.

Despite this presence, American does not operate intra-South America flights for its loyalty members based there. The partnership with JetSmart allows these members to redeem AAdvantage points for travel within the continent rather than being limited to routes between South America and the United States.

The new option comes with some restrictions. Bookings made through American’s website offer only one fare type instead of the three available on JetSmart’s site. However, these redemptions include benefits such as a free checked bag, seat selection, and flexible options for changing or canceling flights. Additionally, redemptions are only available for itineraries operated solely by JetSmart; trips involving both carriers are not eligible.

A search on American’s website showed that as of October 24th, domestic flights from Santiago (SCL) to Antofagasta (ANF) were available for 7,000 points. Flights from Santiago to Buenos Aires (EZE) cost 14,000 points.

AAdvantage members have already been able to earn points—including Loyalty Points toward elite status—on JetSmart-operated flights.
