IndiGo has confirmed a firm order for 30 additional Airbus A350-900 aircraft, increasing its total A350 backlog to 60 jets. This move finalizes a Memorandum of Understanding from June and marks a significant step in the airline's strategy to expand into long-haul operations.

IndiGo's CEO, Pieter Elbers, commented on the deal, stating, "the deal supports IndiGo's goal of becoming a global player by 2030 and aligning with India's aviation hub ambitions."

The Airbus A350-900 is known for its fuel efficiency, with about 25% lower fuel burn, operating costs, and carbon dioxide emissions compared to older models. The aircraft can operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel, and Airbus is targeting full compatibility by 2030. By September 2025, Airbus had received more than 1,400 A350 orders from 63 customers, reflecting strong demand in the Indian market.

IndiGo, traditionally a low-cost regional carrier, is now preparing for long-haul service. The airline plans to build experience by wet-leasing Boeing 777-300ERs for routes between Delhi, Mumbai, and Istanbul. It has also introduced a small premium cabin on its Airbus A321neo fleet to test customer demand for upgraded services. The future addition of Airbus A321XLR jets will allow IndiGo to serve longer, thinner routes, while the A350-900s are scheduled to join the fleet starting in 2027.

The airline's network strategy involves using Delhi and Mumbai as main hubs, with initial expansion focused on European destinations. Further plans include routes to Asia-Pacific and North America. Codeshare agreements will help fill network gaps until the A350s are delivered. However, the strategy faces challenges such as securing improved slot access at major airports and potential delivery delays.

For passengers, the expansion means more nonstop flight options from India to Europe, with future plans for direct services to Asia-Pacific and North America. IndiGo will maintain its unbundled fare model, offering competitive base fares but charging for additional services. Medium-haul routes will be operated by the A321XLR with enhanced comfort seats, while the A350-900s are expected to provide improved cabin comfort compared to the Boeing 777-300ERs currently being used.

IndiGo's long-haul operations will be centered at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai.
