Last month marked 44 years since the Boeing 767 first took to the skies and 43 years since United Airlines introduced the aircraft into commercial service. Over 1,300 units of the widebody twinjet have been produced, initially serving passenger airlines and later becoming a mainstay for cargo operators.

Currently, the Boeing 767 is less common in passenger service due to its age and less efficient operating economics compared to newer widebody aircraft. However, it remains in use on several long-haul routes. According to Cirium, an aviation analytics company, United Airlines operates the two longest scheduled Boeing 767 flights this October. Both routes depart from Houston (IAH) using the Boeing 767-300ER, with destinations at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) in the Netherlands and Rio de Janeiro Galeão International Airport (GIG) in Brazil. These routes cover 5,013 and 5,016 miles respectively and have block times of approximately 10.5 hours.

Boeing continues to see demand for the 767 from cargo operators. The company states: "Boeing continues to see strong market demand for 767 airplanes, which offer outstanding operational efficiency and payload configuration."

United Airlines and Delta Air Lines, both major US carriers, also operate Boeing 767 aircraft on other long routes. United flies the 4,956-mile transatlantic route from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Athens (ATH) using both the Boeing 767-400ER and the 767-300ER. The airline plans to switch to daily 767-400ER service on this route at the end of the month, while currently operating three weekly flights with the 167-seat 767-300ER, which features 46 Polaris business class seats, 22 Premium Plus seats, and 99 economy seats.

Delta Air Lines operates its longest 767 route domestically, flying from New York (JFK) to Honolulu (HNL), a distance of 4,983 miles. The airline uses the Boeing 767-300ER on this corridor, which has a typical maximum range of 6,880 miles.

Outside the US, three airlines operate Boeing 767 flights longer than 4,000 miles. Austrian Airlines uses the 767-300ER daily on the 4,464-mile route from Vienna (VIE) to Washington (IAD), and less frequently to Boston (BOS) and Montreal (YUL). LATAM Airlines Peru operates daily flights between Lima (LIM) and Los Angeles (LAX), a 4,167-mile route, with its Boeing 767-300ER configured with 19 business and 211 economy seats. Brazilian carrier Azul, using aircraft from Portuguese charter company EuroAtlantic Airways, links Belo Horizonte (CNF) and Orlando International Airport (MCO) five times a week with its 267-seat Boeing 767-300ER.
