Federal Express Corporation (FedEx) has participated in an initiative aimed at promoting environmental awareness among children living in care homes in the Greater Tokyo Area. The event, organized by the nonprofit Mirai no Mori, brought together 13 FedEx volunteers and 28 children for a 4-kilometer hike at Mt. Mitake in western Tokyo.

During the event, FedEx volunteers acted as mentors, guiding the children and sharing practical knowledge about environmental protection. The program was designed to offer the children an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and learn about sustainability, while also allowing them to have new experiences outside their usual environment.

Kei Alan Kubota, managing director of FedEx Japan, said, “We believe in empowering our team members and our communities to help create a healthier and more positive future for the environment. Through sustainability initiatives within the communities we serve, we can foster meaningful connections between future generations and nature while promoting environmental stewardship that benefits Japan’s sustainable future. It is a privilege for our team members to contribute to this important environmental project in our community.”

There are about 23,000 children living in care homes across Japan. Many of these children face significant challenges as they approach adulthood. Mirai no Mori provides these young people with nature-based activities such as trekking, forestry work, and river rafting. These programs are intended to develop cognitive, personal, and social skills that will help them transition out of the care system when they reach 18 years old.

This activity is part of FedEx Cares, a global community program by the company. More information about FedEx Cares initiatives can be found on their website.
