Cathay Cargo has announced it is the first airline to provide real-time customs clearance updates to customers using the EzyCargo platform or those connected via ONE Record API links. This development is based on the IATA ONE Record data protocol and brings customs authorities into Cathay Cargo’s real-time communications with its customers.

Many customs authorities require pre-load advanced cargo information (PLACI), and shipments cannot be loaded until approval is granted by the destination authority. After arrival, another approval layer is often needed before shipments are released. With this new system, customers can now see live messages about their shipment’s status.

The current rollout covers customs clearance statuses from authorities in Europe (ICS2 Import Control System), the United States, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates. These statuses are classified as ONE Record “Logistic Events,” letting customers know if their shipment is pending, under assessment, permitted to load, or being held for inspection.

Previously, customers depended on manual updates from ground-handling agents for this information. The new system allows users to access these updates independently and in real time, enabling them to respond more quickly to delays or issues caused by customs inspections.

EzyCustoms and EzyCargo are part of a suite of air cargo tools developed by Global Logistics System (HK) Company Limited (GLS), Cathay Cargo’s innovation partner. GLS has also created other digitalization projects for Cathay Cargo’s commercial and operational settings.

James Evans, Cathay General Manager Cargo Commercial, said: “At Cathay Cargo, we understand the importance of encouraging the participation of all stakeholders in the air cargo industry in IATA ONE Record, to increase the transparency and data connectivity of air cargo.”

He added: “Being able to see live updates from customs authorities adds another layer of transparency to the digital cargo journey. This extended ONE Record integration is currently available to Cathay Cargo customers who are subscribed to the EzyCargo platform, but this additional visibility will be integrated into the Cathay Cargo website for registered account holders in 2026.”

Simon Ng, Chief Executive of GLS, said: “By leveraging the ONE Record-powered EzyCargo platform, Cathay Cargo’s forwarder partners can now access real-time customs clearance status the moment it is issued by customs to airlines. This minimises the possible delay of message relays from the GHAs, and enhances operational efficiency for both our airline and forwarder partners.”
