Hesse's Minister President Boris Rhein officially named a new Lufthansa Boeing 787-9 “Frankfurt am Main” at Frankfurt Airport. The aircraft, known as a “Dreamliner,” is the first long-haul Lufthansa plane at the Frankfurt hub to feature the new Allegris cabin concept. This upgrade brings improved comfort across all travel classes, introducing new seating, high-quality materials, and advanced technology.

Carsten Spohr, CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, stated: "This Boeing 787-9 is another milestone in our consistent fleet modernization journey. I am delighted that we can now also offer Allegris to guests at our largest hub. The new “Frankfurt am Main” not only carries the name of its home into the world: it also represents billions in investment in the premium experience at the Frankfurt hub."

Boris Rhein, Minister President of Hesse, said: "As one of the largest employers in Hesse, Lufthansa is a significant economic driver. It is one of the leading international airlines and builds bridges between people from all over the world. The relationship between Hesse and Lufthansa is particularly strong and based on trust and partnership. I am therefore more than honored to have the privilege of christening an aircraft for the second time with the name ‘Frankfurt am Main’. It is a wonderful tradition that Lufthansa aircraft carry the names of cities and regions as flying ambassadors around the world."

Lufthansa Group plans to add 100 new modern long-haul aircraft to its fleet by 2030, with about half to be stationed at the Frankfurt hub. The new aircraft are designed to be quieter and more environmentally friendly. The Boeing 787-9, for example, uses about 2.5 liters of kerosene per passenger per 100 kilometers, which reduces CO2 emissions by roughly 25 percent compared to older models.

The “Frankfurt am Main,” registered as D-ABPF, has been operating regular flights between Frankfurt and Toronto since October 9, 2025. As the fleet grows, Lufthansa intends to add destinations such as Rio de Janeiro, Bogotá, Hyderabad, and Austin to its winter schedule.

Frankfurt am Main and Lufthansa have maintained an official partnership for 65 years. The D-ABPF is the seventh aircraft to bear the name, including the first Lufthansa Airbus A380. The tradition began in 1960 when Lufthansa named its first Boeing 707 “Frankfurt.”
