The 13th Annual Breast Care International Walk for the Cure took place in Kumasi, Ghana, drawing around 30,000 participants, including survivors, healthcare professionals, students, traditional leaders, and advocates. Delta Air Lines served as the title sponsor for the event, which focuses on raising breast cancer awareness and promoting early detection, particularly among women in rural areas of West Africa.

Over the past decade, Delta’s partnership with Breast Care International (BCI) has contributed to more than 20,000 Ghanaians being screened for breast cancer. Nearly 2,000 suspected cases were identified that might have otherwise gone undetected. Additionally, over 150,000 people have received education about breast cancer awareness. Targeted campaigns have provided free screenings to more than 65,000 women in rural communities, helping to improve healthcare access for underserved populations.

“At Delta, we believe our purpose extends beyond connecting cities—it’s about connecting with people and supporting the communities we serve,” said Michael Thomas, General Manager of Delta Global Communications. “Our partnership with BCI has allowed us to reach thousands of women and families across Ghana with life-saving education and screenings.”

Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addai, Founder and President of BCI, acknowledged Delta’s ongoing involvement. “Breast cancer affects entire communities, not just individuals. Delta’s consistent partnership has helped us bring education and screening directly to the doorsteps of women, especially in underserved areas,” she said. “Together, we are saving lives and giving hope.”

This year’s walk coincided with Delta’s centennial and its 19th year of service to Ghana. The airline recently introduced the Airbus A330-900neo on its Atlanta-Accra route and will add a seasonal flight for the winter. This expansion is expected to offer more travel options during “Detty December,” a period marked by increased tourism and cultural events.

“As we celebrate a century of service, we’re reminded that the most meaningful journeys aren’t measured in miles, but in the lives we touch,” Thomas added. “Walking alongside survivors and advocates today is a privilege, and we remain committed to supporting initiatives that make a real difference.”
