Emirates Airlines has highlighted the evolution of its cabin crew uniform, emphasizing its commitment to timeless design and practicality. The airline maintains a consistent color palette of red and gold, focusing on quality and durability over changing fashion trends.

The uniform is made with nano-coated fabrics that resist stains and creases, helping crew members maintain a polished appearance during long flights. Emirates notes that while the style has been updated over time, comfort and functionality remain priorities to support high standards of safety and hospitality.

The original uniform debuted in 1985 for 80 crew members. It featured sandy-beige jackets with red piping for female staff, paired with cream blouses, red hats displaying the Emirates Arabic logo, and white scarves. The skirt was straight-cut with a single pleat. Both male and female crew wore black leather shoes; men’s uniforms included grey suits with red ties.

In 1987, the airline introduced changes such as double-breasted beige jackets for women with gold buttons and longer skirts. A summer dress option was added for warmer climates. Female First Class crew also wore traditional Arabic attire when serving coffee and dates.

A significant redesign came in 1997 through a collaboration with Spanish designer Paco Rabanne. He retained the beige-and-red scheme but modernized cuts and fits. Female uniforms featured shapely skirts and mandarin-collared jackets; male staff switched to navy blue jackets with beige trousers.

Another update arrived in July 2008 alongside the launch of Emirates’ first Airbus A380. The new look kept the core colors but added pinstripes, more visible red accents on skirts, redesigned hats with wing-shaped logos, and darker maroon accessories. Male uniforms adopted chocolate brown pinstripes with coordinated ties.

Most recently, in 2023 Emirates expanded footwear options for female cabin crew to include 15 styles made from Spanish leather, allowing greater choice based on comfort preferences. Matching handbags and belts were introduced in a brighter shade of red.

An Emirates spokesperson stated: "Emirates cabin crew maintain their impeccable ‘Emirates look’ through a thoughtfully designed uniform that utilises nano-coated fabrics for stain and crease resistance, ensuring it stays immaculate even after long-haul flights."

The evolution of the uniform reflects both cultural influences from the United Arab Emirates and practical needs of global air travel.
