Matthew Painter Head of Communications | UNI Global Union

UNI Americas’ Media, Entertainment & Arts department (UNI Americas) and the International Federation of Actors with their affiliates in the Latin American region (FIA-LA) are launching a three-week campaign to address the working environment in arts, audiovisual, radio, live performance, and entertainment production across Latin America.

Starting Thursday, 11 July, FIA-LA and UNI Americas affiliates will initiate a social media drive advocating for safer, more inclusive, and respectful workplaces. Throughout the campaign, unions will urge employers to collaborate with workers to create violence-free environments and encourage national governments to ratify and implement the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No. 190 on Violence and Harassment in the workplace. This convention outlines employers' responsibilities to provide adequate resources for preventing and addressing incidents of violence and harassment.

The campaign is part of a broader initiative promoting the endorsement and implementation of the FIA-LA/UNI Americas Charter of Cooperation. Presented to regional affiliates in Bogota, Colombia, in December 2023, this charter aims to provide tools and best practices for unions in preventing discrimination, harassment, and violence within this sector.

This initiative follows a joint UNI Americas/FIA survey conducted in 2022 that revealed pervasive issues of sexism, discrimination, violence, and harassment within the audiovisual and performing arts sectors in Latin America. The study indicated that nearly 90 percent (89.4 percent) of respondents had experienced violence or harassment at work. Specifically, 95 percent of trans or non-binary workers reported such experiences compared to 87 percent of women and 70 percent of men.

Lucia Lindner, Director of UNI Americas Media Entertainment & Arts sector stated: "Workers tell us, and our research shows that violence and harassment is rife across the industry in Latin America particularly against women and the LGBTQ community. That’s why we’ve teamed with FIA to join forces to end unacceptable behaviour [sic]and forge a new industry culture that is safe respectful [sic]and free from fear."

The FIA-LA/UNI Americas Charter of Cooperation for a safe work environment in arts, audiovisual production broadcasting live performance [sic]and entertainment is available in English Portuguese [sic]and Spanish below.
