Qantas, in collaboration with Airbus, Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre, and Caon Design Office, has developed a lighting system aimed at reducing jetlag for its A350 aircraft on ultra-long-haul flights.

The initiative stems from over 150 hours of testing conducted at the Airbus Customer Definition Centre in Hamburg. Representatives from Qantas, Airbus, the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre, and Caon Design Office tested numerous lighting patterns and sequences within an Airbus A350 cabin mockup.

Last year, Qantas and the Charles Perkins Centre released preliminary findings on mitigating jetlag impacts by reshaping the inflight travel experience. This research was part of test flights for Qantas’ Project Sunrise program.

Utilizing advanced circadian rhythm modeling, the Charles Perkins Centre advised optimal spectral irradiances to promote circadian adaptation, sleep, and wakefulness. These recommendations were implemented during workshops in Hamburg and adjusted for eye comfort and appearance.

The tailored lighting sequence is designed to help passengers adjust to their destination time zone before arrival. Qantas announced that this trial resulted in 12 unique lighting scenes specifically for Project Sunrise flights:

- “Awake”: Broad-spectrum, blue-enriched lighting helps customers adjust to the destination time zone and stay awake; a softer version can be chosen by crew based on cabin mood.

- “Sunset”: Transitions from daytime mode into night using colors resembling a sunset transitioning into a night sky with moonlight and slow cloud effects.

- “Sunrise”: Dynamic lighting replicates an Australian sunrise rolling from the front to the rear of the cabin.

Additionally, there will be Welcome and Farewell lighting scenes for boarding and disembarking as well as specific scenes for taxiing, take-off, landing, and sleep periods.

The Wellbeing Zone will feature soft blue-enriched light creating a daytime sky effect with slow-moving clouds during ‘the day,’ while offering a moonlight-inspired scene with water ripple reflections during dark periods.

For the first time in its fleet, Qantas' six enclosed First Suites will offer fully customizable lighting sequences allowing passengers to choose their preferred time zone throughout their flight.

Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace highlighted that scientifically informed lighting design is crucial for Project Sunrise flights connecting Australia’s east coast non-stop with London and New York. "These world-first flights have been an opportunity for us to work with experts...to rethink the inflight experience focusing on customer wellbeing," said Wallace.

David Caon emphasized that aircraft lighting significantly affects circadian rhythms more than any other factor impacting jetlag. "The workshops were about crafting a beautiful ambience guided by science," he stated.

Joost van der Heijden of Airbus noted that the A350 Airspace cabin offers more personal space along with advanced features such as high air quality and full connectivity. The innovative LED lighting system provides over 16 million color combinations enabling airlines to customize offerings extensively.

Recently recognized at the Crystal Cabin Awards under 'Passenger Comfort,' the Wellbeing Zone highlights passenger-focused innovations aboard specially designed A350s.
