Bilt Rewards has announced a new initiative allowing customers to earn points on all purchases made at Walgreens, regardless of the credit card used for payment. This is in addition to any existing credit card rewards.

The program offers one point per dollar spent on all purchases, two points per dollar on Walgreens-branded items, and 100 points per prescription refill, though some exclusions apply.

Additionally, Bilt Rewards will assist users in identifying Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and Health Savings Account (HSA)-eligible purchases. They will facilitate transferring funds from linked FSA or HSA payment cards to cover these expenses. This feature aims to help consumers utilize their FSA balances more effectively, which often go unspent and revert back to employers.

This move marks Bilt's entry into the healthcare sector, which constitutes over 17% of U.S. GDP. It positions Bilt alongside other significant expenditure categories such as rent, despite their target demographic potentially spending less in this area compared to others.

The integration with Walgreens adds robustness to the Bilt Rewards program by including another popular spending category for credit card rewards enthusiasts. This follows similar integrations with restaurants and rideshare services.

Bilt also plans to introduce complimentary photo prints as part of the Walgreens partnership. Notably, there is no added benefit for using the Bilt credit card specifically at Walgreens; any linked card will trigger the points.

There are ongoing challenges for Wells Fargo in gaining non-rent spend on its Bilt card portfolio. While it may be hesitant to increase spending on Bilt members, leveraging partnerships like Walgreens could encourage incremental spend and make the portfolio more attractive when renewal time approaches in 2029.

Some experts suggest targeted offers might be more effective within budget constraints. These could focus on Bilt cardmembers who redeem points through low-cost methods such as rent or Amazon rather than travel or point transfers.

The Walgreens loyalty program was launched twelve years ago by former MileagePlus head Graham Atkinson.
