Singapore Changi Airport has placed an order for another Long Range Acoustic Devices (LRAD) system from Genasys, a company specializing in protective communications. The LRAD system, described by the San Diego-based firm as a "bioacoustics deterrent," has been in use at Changi since 2021 to prevent bird strikes during aircraft takeoff and landing.

Genasys has installed LRAD systems at other airports across the Asia-Pacific region and is exploring further opportunities to enhance safety for jets, passengers, and wildlife in both the APAC and European regions. David Schnell, vice president of global hardware sales at Genasys, highlighted that bird strike incidents cost the aviation industry approximately $1.2 billion annually.

The LRAD systems can be operated manually or integrated with remote command centers. They are capable of broadcasting a wide range of tones and predator calls to deter wildlife up to 3,000 meters away without causing habituation.

"LRAD is a humane bioacoustic deterrent that has proven highly effective in preventing aircraft bird strikes near runways," Schnell stated. He added that when combined with millimeter-band avian radar, LRAD systems can automatically detect birds entering runway zones and steer them away using intense sounds and predator calls during critical phases of flight.
