Ranjan Goswami, Senior Vice President – Customer Experience Design | Delta Air Lines

Delta Air Lines is in the process of redesigning its aircraft cabins, a project that aims to enhance comfort, safety, and style for passengers. The airline's Onboard Experience (OBX) team and Cabin Engineering team are collaborating to bring this vision to life.

Michael Steinfeld, Manager of Onboard Product at Delta, explained the scope of the redesign: “We’re responsible for the look and feel of the entire cabin – everything from seat design to the colors of the wall and carpet.” This comprehensive effort involves updating seating materials, lighting, and color palettes across Delta's fleet over several years.

The OBX team has spent four years developing a new interior that reflects Delta's heritage while fitting all aircraft models. This includes choosing colors that complement various shades of white used throughout their fleet. A notable change is the shift from Enchanted Blue seats to a more comforting Delta Dark Blue hue. Premium cabins will feature a "thread of red" to highlight specific customer features.

Alexandra Douglas, General Manager of Cabin Engineering and Programs at Delta, emphasized the importance of product reliability: “From our team’s lens, we ask how reliable is it? How well does it stand up to the rigors of travel?” The engineering team ensures products meet safety standards by conducting rigorous tests simulating real-world conditions.

Tabb Pearson, Manager of Cabin Engineering and Programs at Delta, noted their attention to durability: “No matter how good it looks, if it doesn’t last, it’s not worth it.” The teams aim for long-lasting materials that can withstand daily usage challenges like spills and luggage impacts.

The project requires collaboration among multiple departments within Delta. Steinfeld highlighted this teamwork: “It’s a very creative part of the process where we all get to put our heads together...we work as a team to create something amazing.”

Pearson added perspective on the project's significance as Delta approaches its centennial: “As we approach Delta’s centennial...it’s exciting to reflect and look ahead...we have something really solid coming up.”
