Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has announced an increase in airline fees, a change expected to impact ticket prices for travelers. Over the next three years, these fees will rise by at least 37%, leading to an average increase of 15 euros ($16.29) for short-haul flights. Nighttime flights will see even higher charges, ranging from three to six times more than daytime flights, depending on the aircraft type.

"The increase in charges is driven by exceptionally high inflation and sharply increased interest rates over the past three years," stated Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The new fees also include compensation for financial losses during the pandemic.

The fee structure will see a 41% increase in 2025, followed by a 5% rise in 2026, before decreasing by 7.5% in 2027. These changes are part of Schiphol's plan to invest approximately 6 billion euros ($6.51 billion) in maintenance and improvements over five years.

"With these charges, Schiphol is making the necessary investments in good infrastructure, better services for passengers and airlines and improved working conditions possible," said the airport.

Additionally, Schiphol intends to address noise pollution by banning older, noisier airplanes starting in 2025 and encouraging airlines to use quieter models.

Airport fees are regulated every three years by the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets and are expected to remain stable through at least 2028. With these adjustments, Schiphol is set to become Europe's second-most expensive airport according to KLM, which commented on the inevitable rise in ticket prices due to increased costs being passed on to airlines: "As the costs of setbacks at Schiphol are passed on to airlines, higher ticket prices for travelers are inevitable."
