United Airlines has introduced a new feature for its MileagePlus members, allowing them to pool their miles with friends and family. This initiative aims to help members reach their travel goals more quickly by combining their accumulated miles.

The pooling option is particularly beneficial for families, as there is no age restriction on who can earn MileagePlus miles. It also assists those who may not have enough miles for an award flight, enabling them to reduce the cost of their trip by pooling resources.

Pooling can be advantageous when booking group trips, as it allows the use of miles from different accounts within a single reservation. To start pooling, one member must be designated as the "pool leader." This individual must be at least 18 years old and will manage the pooled miles. Members should choose someone they trust for this role since once miles are transferred into a pool, they cannot be withdrawn.

To create a pool, users need to navigate to the "MileagePlus" section on United's website and follow the steps outlined under "Miles pooling." The pool leader can invite up to four other MileagePlus members to join. These members do not need to share surnames or addresses with the leader.

It is important for potential pool members to note that they can only belong to one MileagePlus pool at any given time and cannot contribute or redeem miles within 72 hours of joining. Additionally, pooled miles are not eligible for seat upgrades or redemptions on partner airlines such as Lufthansa and Air Canada.

Members invited to join a pool will receive an email invitation requiring acceptance before contributing any number of their available MileagePlus miles. Importantly, participating in a mile-pooling arrangement does not affect one's elite status within the program.

If a pool leader opts out of managing the group, all pooled miles are equally distributed among remaining members. Members exiting any pool must wait 90 days before joining another.
