Federal Express Corporation, commonly known as FedEx, has announced the expansion of its state-of-the-art life sciences center in Gimpo City, Gyeonggi Province. This move is part of a strategic effort to meet the increasing demand for specialized healthcare delivery solutions and support the growth of the life sciences industry both domestically and internationally.

The newly expanded Gimpo Life Sciences Center now covers an area of 2,288 square meters, approximately three times larger than its previous size. It features five temperature-controlled zones ranging from minus 150 degrees Celsius to 25 degrees Celsius, all monitored around the clock to comply with cold chain standards required by the pharmaceutical industry. The facility has received KGSP certification and includes temperature control functions to meet both domestic and international logistics needs.

FedEx aims to enhance its logistics expertise in the life sciences sector through this expansion. The company plans to ensure rapid and stable transportation of key healthcare logistics such as investigational medicinal products (IMP), biological samples, and pharmaceutical products. This will allow pharmaceutical and clinical trial companies to focus more on patient care.

Temperature management solutions are essential in the pharmaceutical bio and healthcare sectors for preserving product efficacy. With decades of experience, FedEx provides specialized solutions tailored for healthcare and clinical trials based on a strong foundation that combines an international express network, customized special services (SpS), on-time transport, and a network of life sciences centers worldwide.

The Gimpo Life Sciences Center is one of FedEx's major hubs within its global network that includes locations like Memphis in the United States; Mumbai in India; Singapore; Tokyo in Japan; and Veldhoven in the Netherlands. FedEx's global healthcare infrastructure encompasses over 130 cold chain facilities worldwide, ensuring stable temperature management for cargo transported through domestic and international networks.

Park Won-bin, Managing Director of FedEx Korea, stated: "FedEx is focusing its capabilities on expanding the base of the healthcare industry. The Gimpo Life Sciences Center will serve as a core foundation for realizing this commitment." He added that "the domestic healthcare cold chain logistics market is predicted to grow at an average annual rate of 4.3% from 2023 to 2028[1]. As demand for new pharmaceutical bio-healthcare products increases, we will support high-level transport solutions that ensure integrity so companies can safely distribute their products domestically and internationally."

Meanwhile, FedEx Clinical Care offers end-to-end services for time- and temperature-sensitive healthcare shipments. Utilizing specialized features such as temperature maintenance packaging, priority handling and customs clearance, sensor-based real-time tracking with 24-hour monitoring ensures swift delivery within 24-48 hours.

Recently recognized at the Korea Biopharma Excellence Awards 2024 for outstanding contributions in 'Clinical Supply Chain Logistics Innovation,' FedEx introduced FedEx Surround® in August to enhance control and visibility over healthcare shipments.
