Tourism plays a significant role in the economy of many regions, often leading to a focus on attracting tourists at any cost. However, some destinations are shifting towards sustainability, prioritizing environmental and community well-being.

In Bali, Indonesia, Potato Head has implemented waste-reduction initiatives, while Dominica's Coulibri Ridge focuses on sustainable power generation. These efforts are part of a broader trend where entire destinations aim for sustainable tourism to secure their economic and environmental future.

Dominica stands out as a model for sustainable tourism. Known as the "Nature Island," it is working towards becoming the first climate-resilient nation. The island collaborates with the Indigenous Kalinago people to enhance weather-monitoring systems and infrastructure resilience. "With input from Kalinago chief Sylvanie Burton," Dominica has developed sophisticated weather-monitoring systems and improved water storage practices.

The island's Citizenship by Investment Program funds these initiatives by offering dual citizenship in exchange for investment in its Economic Diversification Fund. A notable project is the Sperm Whale Reserve off Dominica's west coast, which aims to protect species and sequester carbon through natural processes.

Other regions are also embracing sustainable tourism models. Copenhagen's CopenPay program rewards visitors for eco-friendly actions, while Hawaii's Malama Hawaii offers hotel perks for participation in preservation projects. Queensland’s Guardian of the Reef platform encourages educational engagement with the Great Barrier Reef.

Panama launched Sostur, part of its Sustainable Tourism Master Plan, allowing travelers to book eco-friendly activities that support local communities. Bhutan imposes a Sustainable Development Fee for conservation efforts, while Bali and New Zealand have introduced tourist levies to fund environmental programs.

These measures reflect a growing commitment to sustainable tourism that balances economic benefits with ecological responsibility.
