The Cessna 408 SkyCourier, a utility aircraft from Textron Aviation's Cessna division, was first announced in 2017. FedEx Corporation, the largest cargo operator globally, initially showed interest by ordering 50 of these aircraft with an option for another 50 for its subsidiary, FedEx Express. The SkyCourier took its maiden flight in May 2020 and received type certification in March 2022.

This aircraft can accommodate up to 19 passengers or three LD3 containers with a payload capacity of 6,000 lb (2,700 kg) in its freighter configuration. It has a cruise speed of 200 knots and an operational range of 900 nautical miles. Powering the SkyCourier are two Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A turboprop engines.

Textron Aviation describes the SkyCourier as offering "the winning combination of low costs and unparalleled lift capacity." Ron Draper, President and CEO of Textron Aviation, expressed his enthusiasm upon delivering the first aircraft to FedEx Express in October 2022: “We’re thrilled to deliver this aircraft that will help FedEx serve its customers more efficiently.”

FedEx Express's Chief Executive Scot Struminger highlighted the efficiency gains from using the SkyCourier: “The result of four-and-a-half years of collaboration with Textron Aviation on this aircraft, FedEx Express is excited to add the Cessna 408 SkyCourier as part of our fleet modernization programme.”

Textron Aviation plans to offer both cargo and passenger versions of the SkyCourier. A quick-change interior process is being developed to allow rapid reconfiguration between these roles. This flexibility aims to maximize operational efficiency and meet diverse customer needs.

Textron also announced FAA certification for a combi conversion option for the SkyCourier: "This option provides customers the ability to carry a combination of passengers and cargo simultaneously."
